A. Lange & Söhne – back at the top after just 15 years The tradition of precision Saxon watchmaking started 160 years ago on 7 December 1845 when master watchmaker Ferdinand Adolph Lange set up his first workshop in the small town of Glashütte in the picturesque Erzgebirge mountains. And on 7 December 1990, exactly 145 years later and more than 40 years since the confiscation of the flourishing family business by the East German government, his great-grandson Walter Lange returned to Glashütte to set up the company of his forebears for a second time. Together with a few close business friends from the watchmaking industry, inspired like Lange himself by the desire to help integrate the old East Germany into the economic system of the West, he fought to regain his lost inheritance. His visionary goal was once more to create "the best watches in the world" in Glashütte.
